4 Factors That DIYers Must Know Before Buying Welding Machines

Blog

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to welding. The welding process that you choose will determine the type of welding machine to purchase. Other considerations include the scale of the welding application, the kind of welds desired, your budget, the thickness of the metal, and the welding area (outdoors or indoors). DIYers must use personal protective equipment when working with welding machines due to risks such as burns and eye injuries. Here are some factors that DIYers must know when buying welding machines.

Arc Welders -- The two common types of welding are arc welding and MIG welding. Arc welding uses a flux coating on a consumable rod to act as a shielding gas that protects the molten metal from impurities. Unlike other welding applications, arc welding is not affected by wind, and thus, it is ideal for outdoor environments. The arc welding machine is superior at controlling welds; hence, it can be used to penetrate thick metals. However, such a device is not suitable for thin sheets of metal. Also, users need to consider factors such as machine setting and rod selection to yield quality welds.

Metal Inert Gas (MIG) Welding Machines -- MIG welding machines are cheaper compared to arc welders. Also, you can use this type of device for various welding jobs. Beginners always find it easy to learn MIG welding processes due to its simplicity. Also, the kind of welding supports a variety of metals such as aluminium. Therefore, you will find MIG welding is used in the restoration of vehicles. The weld uses inert gas to prevent impurities from contaminating the molten surface. The resultant welds are smooth and easy to clean.

Budget -- A welding machine is one of a DIYer's most significant investments, and thus, one should not skimp on price. If you require more amperage and power for diverse applications in future, the type of welder you plan to buy might cost you more compared to a low amperage and low power unit. Also, remember to factor in the cost of accessories and consumables such as gas and welding protection gear. Welding machines vary in prices from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars depending on size and application.

Applications -- What kind of applications are you planning to use the welding machine on?  Some of the applications include fabrication, restoring old cars, repair of equipment, and sculpturing. It is advisable to take your time to identify the applications that will use the largest chunk of your welding activity before buying a welding machine. Some welders can be used on multiple applications.

Understanding Aspects of Industrial Supply

Gaining a good understanding of industrial supplies can really help a man to get ahead. I'm Jo and while I do not work directly in the industrial equipment or supply business, I have learnt a lot from my brother who works in a large factory in Sydney. I would often spend weekends down there watching the guys at work. Now and again, my brother would ask me to help him out so we could try and find a good deal on a new piece of kit. I did it, and I learnt a lot while I did it. I hope you like my blog.
